Many years ago on a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii I discovered Hawaiian LomiLomi Massage. I was amazed by how good I felt after receiving it.

I felt about 100 pounds lighter!

Such a lightness and genuine good-feeling, after just a few sessions my perspective on life really started to change. I didn’t even know that I was carrying around so much stress until it was lifted by the power of this incredible massage.

Then there was a profound realization and in my heart I knew that there was nothing in me that wanted to return to Vancouver to resume my job in sales, just the thought of it made me nauseous. Afterwards I had another epiphany, I was going to learn to give LomiLomi massage!

In a moment of deep courage I called up my boss and told him that I was not coming back to work, then I extended my plane ticket so I could stay in Hawaii for a few months.

It is my experience that whenever I decide something and come into alignment with it - God, Life, the Universe, whatever you want to call it, supports me. Within a few days I would meet my Lomilomi teacher...

My teacher who was in his 70’s at the time had started learning Lomilomi from his family when he was 8 years old and dedicated his life to helping others by giving and teaching this amazing massage. He has helped hundreds if not thousands of people to relieve all types of health issues – given them relief, hope and sometimes miraculous healings.

At the time he was growing up, Hawaii had been colonized and the Hawaiians were not allowed to speak their native language or continue with their sacred customs like massage and Hula (Hawaiian storytelling and dance).

The Polynesians had been practicing massage for thousands of years before they came to Hawaii about 2000 years ago. Massage was a huge part of their culture and everyone practiced it from farmers to kings! They used it to relieve stress, heal injuries and treat many types of illnesses.

According to the Hawaiian shamans (healers), most illnesses are caused by negative emotions that are trapped inside the body. Massage or “loving hands” as it is sometimes called is very effective at removing this negative emotional energy and dis-ease.

After the colonization of Hawaii, Lomilomi massage went “underground” and the Hawaiians still practiced it but only on family and neighbours. This is one of the reasons why many people have not yet heard of it. Today, Lomilomi is becoming very popular and an in-demand massage in North America, Europe and Japan.

(If you have not experienced LomiLomi yet, it is given with oil and similar to Swedish massage, you are laying down on a massage table. It uses specific techniques to relieve stagnant energy from the body and remove knots which are stress points that are concentrated into a small area. Lomilomi uses long flowing movements and is very enjoyable to receive and to give).

After I returned to Vancouver I started giving massage out of my studio apartment, I learned how to get clients and supported myself financially without having to get another “day job”.

One of the great things about giving massage as an occupation is that you don’t need to work many hours to make a nice income. I was charging 80 – 100$ per session (which lasted 1 ½ hours).

(the whole time set aside for each client is about 2 hours as you want to prepare beforehand for 15 minutes and have about 15 minutes after to clean up).

It is such a nice experience to give massage and it is so great to see how relaxed and happy the client is afterwards.

Later I started teaching workshops on how to give Lomilomi and a couple years ago I created a DVD which walks people through step by step. To date I have helped hundreds of people all around the world learn Lomilomi massage at workshops and with my DVD “Lomilomi the Gift”.
